WEEK 1 - PRE PRODUCTION

DAY 1 CAMERA THEORY + LENSES. EXPOSURE TESTS

Morning : Introduction to camera / exposure theory. Colour temperature. Framing, depth of field, lens choice.

Afternoon: Camera practical. Shoot in small groups with long and wide lenses balancing depth of field, aperture, ISO shutter speed. View results at end of day.

DAY 2 CUT IN CAMERA + SIMPLE EDIT + SOUND INTRO

Morning: Plan and shoot a short mute chronological sequence using six shots. Incorporate The invisible cut + dynamic shot sequences.

Afternoon: Introduction to Editing. Assemble shot sequences. Sound Intro.

DAY 3 COVERING A SEQUENCE, PLANNING AND STORYBOARDING

Morning: Sound Practical. Group exercise shooting Interviews with each other. Synch Sound using FCPX

Afternoon: How to cover a scene effectively. Angles, cutaways, crossing the line

DAY 4 TEST SHOOT DRAMA SCENES WITH SYNCH SOUND

Morning: Make shot list / Storyboard for scenes. Rehearse Actors + Crew

Afternoon: Shoot two Test shoots for simple scenes with group split in half

DAY 5 CUT SEQUENCES AND PITCH STORIES FOR NEXT WEEK

Morning: Cut test shoots. Using Synch sound/ clapper – Advanced Synch Editing on FCPX

Afternoon: The Principals of Screenwriting. Ideas workshops and exercises to prepare for next weeks Pitching . Pre – Pitching session

WEEK 2 - PRODUCTION

DAY 6 PITCH DAY

Morning : Students pitch individually or in Pairs. Crew-up for end of course short films

Afternoon: Pre –Production meetings with camera and sound tests. Casting and Locations

DAY 7 PLANNING THE SHOOT

Morning : ‘Working with Actors’ workshop using scripted dialogue and improvisation. Incorporating - Blocking , camera angles, coverage and continuity.

Afternoon: Final Script development. Pre –Production with Recces / Final Casting and Exercise editing - with advanced editing techniques using FCPX

DAY 8 TEST SHOOT DAY

Morning : Final Pre-Production documents assembled. Call sheets. Release Forms. Risk Assessment forms

Afternoon: Test shoots or pre-shoots on set / location or actors rehearsal. Volunteers – for next weeks “Shooting from the Hip” Quick Doc Project.

WEEK 3 - POST PRODUCTION + QUICK DOCS

DAY 11

Morning: First Assembly of final films. Syncing and Workflow established

Afternoon: Documentary Team Assembled + Projects decided for ‘Shooting from the Hip’

DAY 12

Morning : Short Film viewings and an overview of editors workflow and technique with

video material from Walter Murch. Short film viewings

Afternoon: All Students Editing Drama shorts and Exercises. Docs In Pre-production

DAY 13

Morning: Documentary Team on Location with ‘Shooting from the Hip

Afternoon: All Students on camera tests or Editing Drama shorts and Exercises

DAY 14

Morning: ‘Straight 8’ Cut in Camera exercise

Afternoon: All Students Editing Drama shorts and Exercises and Documentaries

DAY 15

Morning: Final cuts – Sound Mixing – Colour grading and outputting

Afternoon: Final Film Screenings from the course
