Alumni Adam Price storms The Bastion

Adam Price, who graduated from Brighton Film School's Filmmaking HND 2-year course in 2014 recently undertook a challenging professional project that required stamina, quick thinking and plenty of pre-planning as he captured The Bastion iron-distance triathlon on behalf of The Castle Triathlon Series and popular triathlon website www.beyondgoinglong.co.uk.

Adam was asked to create a promotional film, that captured all the action and emotion for a full iron-distance triathlon set within the stunning and historic grounds of Hever Castle in Kent. An iron-distance triathlon is one of the toughest one-day sporting endurance events you can undertake and comprises of a 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride and 42km run. Adam had to capture all this action that played out over 17 hours of racing, and managed to capture the atmosphere from the professionals competing for a £10,000 prize purse, to the amateurs who were just hoping to complete the challenge.

Adam Price said:

I was invited by Yvonne from Castle Triathlon Series to produce a timelapse film of The Bastion Triathlon event at Hever Castle in Kent.

The race itself starts with a 3.8 km open-lake swim, followed by a 180 km bike ride and then finally a 42 km run. That coupled with the beauty of Hever Castle and the surrounding countryside made for an extraordinary event.

I photographed the film with the help of a Syrp Genie interval-o-meter which could accurately trigger exposures at a specified interval which made the process more accurate than doing it by hand. Another function in particular I was keen to capitalise on was the Genie's ability to programme camera movement in advance; this meant predicting where the athletes might be within the frame throughout the duration of the shot sometimes a couple of minutes beforehand. It was rather tricky to begin with but I quickly immersed myself into the athlete's rhythm and I become reasonably accurate by the end of the day.

Yvonne Turner, Marketing Manager at the Castle Triathlon Series said:

Adam was great to work with and we were really impressed with his professionalism, hard work and creative ideas. We certainly would have no hesitation recommending him or hiring him again and thanks to Brighton Film School for the introduction.

The final film has been published on the event website and distributed amongst the triathlon media, ensuring it will have a wide audience:
