Love animation and films? Want to work as an Animation Artist, 2D Animator, 3D Modeler, Digital Painter, Script Writer, Storyboard Artist, Compositor, Stop Motion Animator or Special Effects Maker? If you have an artistic flair or eye for design this degree-level course will kick-start your career in the animation film industry.
You will gain a fully rounded understanding of the industry by devising and producing short animation films. There are many varied and interesting skills you will develop, which include filming and directing, modelling and character design, production aspects of writing scripts, story boarding as well as editing for post-production.
The course is very practical and there will be a strong emphasis on professional development and understanding job roles to set targets and goals for career plans. Brighton Film School will teach you the main principals of animation: movement, expression and empathy. You will have workshops that cover life drawing, software application 2D, storytelling, camera and sound workshops as well as class based contemporary and historical research.
A wide range of film industry standard software will be used including Adobe, Autodesk Maya, Dragonframe, state-of-the-art cameras and sound recording equipment.
Animation involves effective team working skills. Collaborative practice is an integral part of the animation industry and you will be extending your skills by taking part in production led teamwork. Throughout the course you will attend guest lectures and Q&A sessions with industry professionals.

Who is this course for?
The Animation Film Production is aimed at those students who have achieved two A levels at Grade C or above, or BTEC Extended Diploma at Level 3. We will also consider those who can demonstrate prior relevant experience or transferable skills who want to train to become the next generation of animation filmmakers. No prior knowledge or practical skills are required, as we will train you ready for working in the film or television industry, however we insist on commitment, enthusiasm and punctuality.
In years 1 and 2, students will study different units that contribute to holistic grounding in all aspects of the animation production process. The units will be delivered through workshop sessions alongside classroom analysis and research.
Year 1 units: Professional Development, Contextual Studies, Individual Project, Techniques & Practices – Drawing, Visual Narratives - Stop Motion, Screen-based Practices, Media Practices – Animation and Photographic Practices – Film Techniques.
Year 2 units: Applied Practice Collaborative Project, Professional Practice, 3D Modelling & Rendering, Digital Animation, Moving Image, Script Writing and Professional Model Making.
A full level 3 BTEC extended diploma is required or two grade C A Levels. Selection is by application and interview with a portfolio preferred. We accept students from a variety of backgrounds.
Applicants who are non-native English speakers, or who have not studied the final two years of school in English, must demonstrate capability in English at a standard commensurate to:
- IELTS 5.5, with a minimum of 5.0 being awarded on individual sections, for a level 4 or 5 qualification
- IELTS 6.5 for a level 6 or 7 qualification
- PTE Academic score of 42 to 49, for a level 4 or 5 qualification
- PTE Academic score of 58 to 64, for a level 6 or 7 qualification
